In this workshop, Chanakarn will show us her process of how she decorates her work with various underglaze techniques, infusing pottery and sculpture with a sense of playfulness and joy. "Colors play an inportnat role in my work, I use color as a metaphor when I talk about multicultural, diversity. My goal is to introduce colors into your work -- best fearless and enjoy the process!" Chanakarn will start the workshop off with an artist talk and Q&A. She will delve into the art of crafting narrative works, discussing the inspiration behind her work and how these choices shape the illustrated surfaces. Chanakarn will demonstrate how she decorates her surfaces with multiple underglaze techniques such as water coloring, Sgraffito on bisqueware, painting + layering color, stamping, underglaze pencil and cray, stencil, etc. Bangkok-born Chanakarn Semachai, known as Punch, is a ceramic artist and educator. She earned her BA from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand and her Master of Fine Arts from Edinboro University, USA. Her work explores identity and multiculturalism, blending sculptural and functional elements with vibrant colors and ornamentation to convey personal narratives with humor. Notably, she experiments with layering colored plexiglass over clay to create unique color filters. Her international exhibitions span Thailand, Germany, Taiwan, China,Germany, and the US. A 2022 NCECA Emerging Artist awardee, she also earned recognition from The Ceramics Monthly. Additionally, in 2024, she attended the Gulgong Ceramic Festival in Australia as one of the featured masters. Currently, she teaches creative ceramics full-time at Chulalongkorn University. Level: All levels. Participants need to bring 2 small/medium bisqueware pieces to underglaze. Clay MUST be cone 5/6 if you wish to glaze fire.

One-Time & Workshop Cancellation & Refund Policy: If you need to cancel your class, you must email info@merrittceramics.com 48 hours in advance to receive a refund minus a $10 transaction fee. After that time there is no refund or rescheduling. Any rescheduling at any time, if available, will cost $10.
